At 5:30 Tokyo time (20:30 UTC) on May 5, 2023, as the Diamond Princess entered the port of Nagasaki (Japan), a port pilot plummeted from the assisting pilot boat into the sea.
The cruise ship promptly launched a rescue craft and retrieved the 69-year-old crew member from the water in safety. The individual [redacted] was found incapacitated while wearing a lifejacket. Two hours later, he passed away in a hospital.
The incident took place at the conclusion of the 8-day “Golden Week Circle Japan Cruise” (itinerary Apr 29 – May 7, roundtrip from Yokohama-Tokyo) with call ports Aomori City (May 1), Hakodate City (May 2), Busan Korea (May 4) and Nagasaki City (May 5/port stay 7 am – 4 pm).
