Introduction
On April 27, 2024, a critical medical evacuation was carried out for a 35-year-old male crew member aboard Carnival Sunshine, facilitated by the US Coast Guard’s 7th District Southeast based in Miami.
Details of the Incident
The medevac occurred while the ship was navigating approximately 160 miles east of Jacksonville, Florida, en route to Port Canaveral. A Sikorsky MH-60 Seahawk helicopter from USCG Air Station Clearwater was deployed, successfully hoisting the crew member along with a ship nurse. They were then transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida, for urgent medical treatment.
Operational Context
This emergency unfolded at the start of a 5-day Bahamas Cruise, which included planned stops at Half Moon Cay and Nassau. The prompt response by the Coast Guard ensured the crew member received the necessary medical attention swiftly, highlighting the critical collaboration between maritime and medical services for ensuring safety at sea.
