Introduction
On August 2, 2025, Celebrity Constellation experienced a temporary but disruptive loss of power while sailing from Ravenna to Rome on an 11-night Mediterranean voyage. The vessel was drifting at low speed in the Ionian Sea near Crotone, Italy, for approximately two hours during the early morning hours, with no air conditioning, propulsion, or electrical services available to guests.
Details of the Incident
Power Loss and Guest Impact:
- The ship lost both hotel and propulsion power just after 3:00 a.m. local time while sailing roughly 25 nautical miles east-southeast of Crotone, Italy.
- During the two-hour blackout, the 2,170 passengers onboard endured a lack of air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, and functioning restrooms.
- Guests were served cold meals during the outage, and one described the conditions as “overheated” after just one hour without ventilation.
- While drifting at 1–2 knots—far below the standard 24-knot cruising speed—emergency lighting and communication systems remained in place.
Recovery and Operational Status:
- Partial power was restored after about two hours, gradually improving navigation and hotel services.
- The ship regained cruising speed and reached Messina, Sicily on schedule later that morning, with no reported itinerary changes.
- A spokesperson for the Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity Cruises’ parent company, stated that technical teams acted quickly and communicated with guests throughout the disruption.
Technical Background:
- Celebrity Constellation, launched in 2002, is a Millennium-class vessel with a history of reliable operation.
- During power failures, cruise ships typically rely on backup generators to sustain navigation and basic safety systems, but these do not support full hotel operations such as galley use or HVAC systems.
- Tracking data confirmed the ship’s slowed movement during the event, consistent with reduced power output rather than active propulsion.
Outcome and Safety:
- No injuries or critical equipment damage were reported.
- The incident served as a reminder of the operational challenges that aging cruise vessels can face, especially in warmer climates where passenger comfort is sensitive to ventilation loss.
