What happened
On Friday, January 25, 2024, a Cessna 208 Caravan I seaplane registered VH-ZWH and operated by Sydney Seaplanes Pty Ltd capsized during takeoff from Rose Bay Water Airport in Sydney Harbour, NSW. At approximately 11:45 am local time, the aircraft encountered a rogue wave during its takeoff run near Shark Island, causing the port float to collapse and the aircraft to overturn in the water.
Nine occupants were on board the aircraft, including the pilot. All nine persons safely evacuated to a float following the capsizing. One occupant sustained minor injuries during the incident. The aircraft, manufactured in 2006 and powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A engine, sustained substantial damage and began to sink following the capsize.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) was notified and is investigating the incident. The occurrence has prompted discussion within the aviation community regarding water takeoff safety procedures in Sydney Harbour.
