What happened
On Thursday, 15 August 2024, a Piper PA-28-181 Archer II registered VH-TVP and operated as a private aircraft encountered engine failure shortly after departing Bankstown Airport, NSW. At approximately 2:30 pm local time, the pilot declared an emergency and executed a forced landing in Terone Park, Sydney, near a school.
The aircraft struck trees during the landing approach but remained largely intact. Both occupants, comprising the pilot and one passenger, were on board at the time of the incident. Despite the impact with vegetation and the emergency nature of the landing, both emerged from the aircraft with only minor injuries.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) was notified of the occurrence. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the engine failure that led to the forced landing.
