What happened
On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, a de Havilland Canada DHC-8-315Q maritime patrol aircraft registered JA722A and operated by the Japan Coast Guard collided with Japan Airlines flight JL516, an Airbus A350-941, while taxiing at Tokyo-Haneda Airport. The DHC-8 was en route to Niigata Airport to transport supplies for earthquake relief operations when the collision occurred during the taxi phase at approximately 17:47 local time.
The DHC-8, carrying six crew members, was taxiing when it struck the landing A350, which was carrying 379 passengers and crew. Five of the six crew members aboard the DHC-8 were killed in the collision, while the surviving captain sustained severe burn injuries. All 379 occupants of the A350 evacuated safely, though 15 passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.
