What happened
On Thursday, January 31, 2024, a private Cessna aircraft encountered a critical technical malfunction while in flight near Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast. At approximately 2:00 pm local time, the pilot reported the malfunction to air traffic control via mayday call, but communication was subsequently lost.
Unable to reach a suitable airfield, the pilot executed a crash landing in a paddock near Dundowran Beach. The aircraft came to rest heavily on impact, and a fire broke out immediately after the crash. The pilot, a man in his 30s, sustained a head injury with a laceration above his eye but remained conscious and was able to communicate with emergency responders who arrived at the scene.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified and is investigating the occurrence. The exact cause of the technical malfunction and the full sequence of events leading to the crash remain under investigation.
