Update 2: Serious traffic crash, Macgregor

What happened

Incident Overview

On Thursday, November 17, 2022, a serious traffic crash occurred at the intersection of Mains Road and Cosmic Street in Macgregor, Queensland, when an unregistered vehicle struck a 12-year-old boy crossing the road. The incident began when the vehicle failed to stop for Highway Patrol officers conducting registration checks on Kessels Road and subsequently travelled through a red light at speed.

Queensland Police attended the scene immediately. The child was transported to Queensland Children’s Hospital with minor head injuries and remains in a stable condition. The driver fled the scene on foot through a nearby shopping centre.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Mains Road and Cosmic Street in Macgregor, Queensland, at approximately midday on Thursday, November 17, 2022. The initial police pursuit began on Kessels Road when Highway Patrol officers attempted to intercept the vehicle for a registration check.

Emergency Response

Queensland Police Highway Patrol officers were on scene conducting registration checks when the incident occurred. Queensland Ambulance Service attended and transported the injured child to Queensland Children’s Hospital. Police activated lights and moved into traffic in an attempt to intercept the vehicle before the collision took place.

Investigation

Detectives from Morningside Child Protection and Investigation Unit led the investigation. On the morning of November 18, 2022, officers attended a Woodridge residence where a 24-year-old Wynnum West man and a 19-year-old Wynnum West man were taken into custody without incident. The 24-year-old driver has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle, and fail to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash. The 19-year-old man, who was assisting police, was released without charge. The 24-year-old was expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 19, 2022.
