Update 1: Serious crash, Alexandra (Mackay region)

What happened

Incident Overview

On Wednesday, July 11, 2023, a serious three-vehicle collision occurred on Mackay Eungella Road at Alexandra in the Mackay region, Queensland. A white Toyota Corolla travelling west towards Walkerston was stationary and indicating to turn right onto Palms Road when it was struck from behind by a green Toyota Landcruiser, also travelling west. The impact forced the Corolla into the path of an oncoming Nissan Navara travelling east, resulting in a second collision.

All three drivers were transported to hospital for treatment. One driver, a 67-year-old woman from South Mackay, was later airlifted to Townsville Hospital for further care. Queensland Police have since charged the driver of the Landcruiser in connection with the incident.

Emergency Response

Queensland Ambulance Service attended the scene and transported all three drivers to Mackay Base Hospital. One patient, a 67-year-old woman, was subsequently airlifted to Townsville Hospital for further treatment due to the severity of her injuries.

Investigation

Queensland Police investigated the collision and have charged the 72-year-old driver of the Landcruiser with driving without due care and attention causing Grievous Bodily Harm. The driver is due to appear at Mackay Magistrates Court on November 28, 2023. Police have appealed for any motorists with dashcam footage or witnesses to the crash to come forward with information.
