Update 1: Fatal traffic crash, Coopers Plains

What happened

Incident Overview

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, a fatal vehicle and pedestrian collision occurred in Coopers Plains, Queensland, when a Mitsubishi Lancer left the roadway and struck a pedestrian on a footpath near the intersection of Kessels and Riawena roads. A 35-year-old Coopers Plains woman died at the scene.

Queensland Police attended and commenced a full investigation. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while excessively speeding and learner driver unaccompanied.

The collision occurred on Kessels Road near the intersection with Riawena Road, Coopers Plains, at approximately 4:45–4:50am on Thursday morning.

Emergency Response

Queensland Police and Queensland Ambulance Service attended the scene. The driver was transported to hospital by ambulance. The pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene.

Investigation

Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the collision. A 19-year-old Logan Reserve man has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while excessively speeding and learner driver unaccompanied. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Beenleigh Magistrates Court on September 24, 2024.

Police are appealing for the drivers of three vehicles—believed to be a sedan and two utilities—that were travelling behind the Mitsubishi Lancer on Kessels Road shortly before the crash to contact police with any information.
