What happened

Incident Overview

In the early hours of Sunday, September 15, 2024, a tragic accident occurred near the Queensland and New South Wales northwest border when an SUV veered off Morialta Road and plunged into Carwal Creek. Two occupants died in the incident; a third was rescued and airlifted to hospital.

The vehicle rolled down an embankment and became fully submerged in the creek. Emergency services and local residents responded immediately, with one survivor rescued by friends and a local property owner.

The collision occurred on Morialta Road, south of Mungindi in Queensland, near the Queensland-NSW border, at approximately 1:15 AM on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Emergency Response

Emergency services responded to the scene in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 23-year-old survivor was rescued by friends and a local property owner before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Recovery operations continued throughout the morning. The bodies of the two deceased occupants were recovered from the submerged vehicle around 12:00 PM on Sunday.

Investigation

Crash Investigators are actively examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. A report will be prepared for the coroner. The identities of the two deceased persons are pending formal confirmation.
