Incident Overview
A road train struck the rear of a broken-down B-double on the Hume at Breadalbane shortly after 4am on 17 July 2026, and both trucks caught fire.
Fatality
The driver of the road train, which was carrying aerosols, died at the scene.
Other Driver
The 31-year-old B-double driver was assessed for minor head injuries and taken to Yass Hospital in stable condition for mandatory testing.
Breakdown
Police said preliminary inquiries indicated the B-double had mechanical trouble and stopped in the left lane.
Warnings
Police said its driver activated hazard measures and used radio communications to warn other drivers.
Fire
The impact ignited both heavy vehicles and firefighters remained while the wreckage continued smouldering.
Road Closure
The Hume was closed for several hours and later reopened in all lanes.
Investigation
Police continued examining the fatal incident and prepared a report for the coroner.
