A devastating workplace accident at New Zealand’s largest kiwi fruit and avocado pack house led to a man’s leg being amputated after he was run over twice by a reversing forklift. This tragic incident has spurred major safety advancements in the industry.
Details of the Accident
On April 25, 2022, at Trevelyan’s Pack and Cool Limited’s Te Puke site, the victim was struck by a reversing forklift while walking behind it. His left leg and foot were run over, and then tragically, run over a second time when the driver moved the forklift forward. The injuries were so severe that his lower left leg had to be amputated below the knee.
Impact and Compensation
The workplace accident had a profound impact on the victim’s life, affecting his physical, emotional, and financial well-being. “Everyday tasks like dressing, showering, and walking have become challenging,” he said. He received over $NZ123,000 in compensation for his injuries.
Safety Advancements and Reforms
As a result of the incident, Trevelyan’s Pack and Cool Limited has committed to significant safety improvements exceeding $NZ500,000. These advancements include fitting 40 forklifts with an “AI pedestrian detection system” and collaborating with the kiwi fruit industry to promote the adoption of this technology. The company will also invest in health and safety training and provide funding to the Amputee Society and scholarships for the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand.
