Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thank you. Cruise ship companies are tonight being accused of supplying vulnerable passengers with free alcohol and doling out gambling credits. Sophie Walsh is with me in the studio tonight. Sophie, a class action is imminent.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yes, Pete. It is expected to launch this December or January. The legal action against Royal Caribbean and Carnival, which owns P&O, has been building since May. The catalyst was the death of a man who jumped overboard from P&O’s Pacific Adventure after allegedly losing thousands of dollars at the ship’s casino. Compensation lawyers Carter Capner Law say they already have the numbers to proceed with the lawsuit, with up to 10,000 passengers believed to be affected.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Passengers aren’t scrutinized as to their capacity to repay. Other enticements to lose money include offering free cruises and allowing gambling while passengers are heavily intoxicated.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
We did contact both companies for comment today. P&O Cruises Australia says they have responsible conduct and gaming policies on all of their ships, which they take seriously. Pete.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Okay, Sophie, thank you.
