Introduction
A devastating accident occurred on Sapelo Island, Georgia, on October 19, 2024, when a ferry dock walkway collapsed, plunging approximately 20 people into the water and resulting in at least 7 fatalities. The incident took place during a Cultural Day festival celebrating the island’s Gullah-Geechee community.

Details of the Incident
The collapse occurred as visitors were preparing to board the ferry back to the mainland after attending the festival. The aluminum gangway, installed in 2021, suddenly gave way, sending people tumbling into the Atlantic Ocean. A large-scale search and rescue operation was immediately launched, involving the U.S. Coast Guard, McIntosh County Fire Department, and other local agencies.

Operational Context
Sapelo Island, located approximately 60 miles south of Savannah, is accessible only by ferry. The dock and ferry service are managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). According to DNR Commissioner Walter Rabon, the gangway appears to have suffered a structural failure, although a thorough investigation is underway.
