Introduction

Multiple cruise ships have extended their stays in Juneau, Alaska, as a significant storm brings high winds and disrupts travel plans across Southeast Alaska. The unusual weather has led to the cancellation of several port visits and altered the itineraries of major cruise lines.

Details of the Incident

On Monday, September 30th, two of the three vessels that arrived in Juneau—MS Koningsdam and MS Eurodam—announced they would remain docked until Tuesday evening, October 1st, due to forecasted winds of up to 60 mph affecting the Southeast Panhandle. This decision impacts thousands of passengers and reshuffles the logistical and operational plans of the cruise lines involved.

Impact on Ship Schedules and Local Economy

MS Koningsdam, carrying 2,650 passengers, arrived early to avoid the worst of the storm, skipping a scheduled stop in Skagway. Similarly, MS Eurodam adjusted its schedule to ensure the safety and comfort of its 2,104 passengers. These extensions are expected to provide an unexpected economic boost to Juneau, as passengers spend more time and money ashore.

Weather Forecast and Further Disruptions

Meteorologists predict that the storm will continue to affect the region through Tuesday morning, with Sitka and Ketchikan poised to experience the most significant disruptions. The cruise ship Norwegian Bliss and other vessels like MS Noordam are also adjusting their schedules in response to the storm, highlighting the extensive impact of the severe weather on cruise operations in the area.
