Introduction

Tropical Storm Ernesto, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the northern Caribbean, has prompted several cruise lines to adjust their itineraries. The storm, affecting areas around Puerto Rico on the evening of August 13, 2024, has forced rerouting to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers and crew.

Details of the Incident

The adjustments were made as Ernesto approached with intensifying weather conditions. Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International, two of the largest cruise operators, have announced changes to their schedules to avoid the adverse effects of the storm. These changes are aimed at avoiding the worst of the weather and ensuring smoother sailing conditions for all onboard.

Specific Changes to Itineraries

Carnival Cruise Line:

  • Carnival Pride adjusted its schedule to arrive in Bermuda a day early and will now depart on Thursday.
  • Carnival Magic canceled its stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and added a visit to Nassau, Bahamas.
  • Carnival is also monitoring the paths of Carnival Freedom and Mardi Gras for any necessary adjustments.

Royal Caribbean International:

  • Icon of the Seas switched from an Eastern Caribbean itinerary to a 7-night Western Caribbean route, now including stops in Cozumel, Roatan, and Costa Maya.
  • Rhapsody of the Seas reordered its port visits to include Bridgetown, Castries, St John’s, Phillipsburg, and St. Croix.
  • Symphony of the Seas altered its course to visit Nassau instead of Puerto Plata.

Cruise Lines and Passenger Reactions
Passengers have generally reacted understandingly to these changes, appreciating the cruise lines’ efforts to prioritize safety over convenience. The cruise lines have kept passengers informed through updates and have worked to minimize disruptions while ensuring a pleasant and safe cruise experience despite the tropical storm.
