Introduction
A medical evacuation was conducted from Saga Cruises’ Spirit of Adventure on April 1, 2026, after a crew member became seriously ill while the vessel was sailing off the northern coast of Spain. The operation was coordinated by Spanish maritime rescue authorities.

Details of the Medical Emergency

Location and Alert:

  • The vessel was positioned approximately 63 nautical miles (100 km) from Estaca de Bares, Spain.
  • The ship’s medical officer assessed the crew member’s condition and determined that urgent treatment ashore was required.

Rescue Coordination:

  • Spanish Maritime Rescue coordinated the operation.
  • The vessel was directed to alter course toward A Coruña while a rescue helicopter was dispatched.

Airlift Operation:

  • A Helimer 402 rescue helicopter reached the vessel shortly before midnight.
  • The crew member was hoisted from the ship and transferred to the aircraft.
  • The helicopter transported the patient to Alvedro Airport near A Coruña.

Transfer Ashore:

  • Emergency medical personnel received the patient upon arrival.
  • The crew member was transported by ambulance to the University Hospital Complex of A Coruña for further treatment.

Operational Outcome:

  • No further details regarding the crew member’s condition or nationality have been released.
  • Spirit of Adventure continued its voyage following the evacuation.
