Circumstances:
On the morning of June 1, 2024, a Eurocopter AS350 helicopter was attempting to land in a confined area near Jabiru Airport in the Northern Territory, Australia. During the final stages of the landing maneuver, the helicopter’s main rotor blades made contact with a rock ledge. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the main rotor blades and the tail boom of the aircraft.
The factors that contributed to the helicopter’s descent into the confined area and the subsequent collision with the rock ledge are currently under investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). Preliminary findings suggest that the pilot may have misjudged the terrain or encountered unexpected obstacles during the landing. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported among the occupants of the helicopter.
