During the landing, the aircraft encountered a gust of wind and touched down hard on the runway surface. Following the hard landing, the pilot lost directional control of the aircraft.
The aircraft subsequently veered off the runway and a ground loop occurred. As a result of the sequence, the Bellanca Citabria sustained substantial damage. No fatalities were reported.
