Introduction
A devastating head-on collision on Shute Harbour Road near Airlie Beach has resulted in the tragic deaths of three people, including a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon and has left the community in mourning.

Crash Overview
The fatal crash took place on Sunday, August 11th, 2024, at approximately 1:06 PM on Shute Harbour Road in Mount Marlow, near Airlie Beach. A Nissan Navara, driven by a man in his 30s, veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Toyota Landcruiser traveling in the opposite direction.

Fatalities and Injuries
The driver’s pregnant wife, aged 35, who was in the front passenger seat, and her 60-year-old mother, seated in the back, were tragically killed instantly in the collision. The unborn baby also did not survive. The two male drivers were airlifted to Townsville Hospital in critical condition. Additionally, two women and another man in the Landcruiser sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. While the exact cause remains unknown, Acting Inspector Mitch Benson stated that the Nissan Navara veered onto the wrong side of the road for reasons yet to be determined. Weather conditions, including rain and wet roads at the time of the accident, will also be considered as part of the investigation.
