Crash Description

A 17-year-old girl was on the roadway when she was struck by a red Mazda 3. Prior to this, a white utility was allegedly seen driving dangerously in the area. After the Mazda hit the girl, it continued for a short distance before stopping.

Injuries/Fatalities

The 17-year-old girl from Glenella sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mackay Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition. A 53-year-old male passenger in the Mazda was allegedly assaulted by bystanders and was also transported to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the Mazda, a 16-year-old girl, and two other passengers (a 12-year-old boy and a 56-year-old woman) were uninjured.

Emergency Response

Police were called to the scene and broke up the altercation between the group of people and the Mazda’s occupants. Paramedics transported the injured girl and the assaulted passenger to the hospital.

Investigation

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and the alleged assault.

Witnesses/Appeals

Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage of the incident, particularly of the white utility or the Mazda prior to, during, or after the crash, to come forward.
