Incident Overview

A devastating crash occurred on the Great Western Highway at St Marys in Western Sydney around 4:00 AM on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. A 49-year-old man, on his way to work, was killed when his car was hit by another vehicle that was being followed by NSW Police.

Details of the Incident

Police officers in a marked police vehicle saw a dark green Holden Insignia sedan stopped on Putland Street. They deemed the vehicle to be acting suspiciously and pulled up near it. The driver of the Holden then accelerated towards the Great Western Highway, where police briefly lost sight of it. The officers activated their lights and sirens and continued to follow the vehicle, but they were not in an official police pursuit. Shortly after, the Holden collided with a silver Toyota Corolla hatchback being driven by the 49-year-old man. The driver of the Holden then fled the scene on foot.

Fatality and Arrest

Tragically, the 49-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla died at the scene. The driver of the Holden, a 43-year-old man, was later apprehended by police at a nearby residence on Chapel Street. He was allegedly attempting to steal clothes from a clothesline.

Investigation and Road Closure

The Great Western Highway was closed in both directions at St Marys between Glossop Street and Sydney Street. A crime scene was established, and a police investigation is underway. The 43-year-old driver was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing. He was disqualified from driving and is known to police. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash, including the speed of the Holden and the actions of the police officers involved.

Conclusion

This tragic incident has resulted in the loss of an innocent life and has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the police involvement. Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased man and acknowledged the devastating impact of the crash.
