Incident Overview

On January 5, 2024, 51-year-old Alistair “Sid” McLean, a beloved member of the Lancelin community, was killed while cycling on Lancelin Road. He was struck by a Honda Jazz hatchback driven by 30-year-old Thanh Nguyen.

Details of the Crash

McLean was out for his regular morning ride when Nguyen’s vehicle veered off the road and hit him. Nguyen, an inexperienced driver who had only been in Australia for five weeks at the time, claimed his vision was obscured by the sun.

Tragic Outcome

McLean suffered a traumatic brain injury in the crash and died the following day in Royal Perth Hospital. His death devastated his family and the Lancelin community.

Sentencing

Nguyen appeared in Perth Magistrates Court via video link on Monday, October 7, 2024. He was disqualified from driving for one year and received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 10 months. This means he will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense within the next 10 months.

McLean’s family was present in court for the sentencing. They have previously described him as a loving and adventurous man who was deeply involved in his community. He is remembered as a wonderful husband, father, and friend.
