Incident Overview

A horrific multi-vehicle crash occurred on the Riddoch Highway in Nangwarry, near the South Australia-Victoria border, on Sunday afternoon, October 27, 2024, at approximately 2:40 PM. The crash involved three vehicles and resulted in the death of a five-year-old boy and critical injuries to his 15-year-old sister.

Details of the Crash

The crash was triggered when a black Holden sedan struck an emu, causing a grey seven-seater Toyota station wagon to brake suddenly to avoid a collision. A white Nissan ute traveling behind the Toyota was unable to stop in time and crashed into its rear.

Family Tragedy

The Toyota was carrying a family of six from Mount Gambier: Chris, the driver and a respected chef, his wife Paula, and their four children. Tragically, their five-year-old son was killed in the crash, and their 15-year-old daughter sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Adelaide. Chris, Paula, and their two other children, a 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Community Impact and Support

The tragedy has deeply affected the family, who were already going through a difficult time due to Chris’s recent job loss and the passing of their grandfather in June. The community has rallied around the family, offering support and condolences. An online fundraiser has been launched to help the family with unexpected costs during this challenging period.

Investigation

The driver of the Nissan ute, a 22-year-old man, was not injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The female driver of the Holden sedan was also uninjured. Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Conclusion

This devastating crash is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety, particularly in areas with wildlife. The community’s thoughts are with the grieving family as they navigate this difficult time.
