Incident Overview

On October 8, 2022, a tragic car accident occurred on the Monaro Highway near Lanyon Drive. The incident involved a car carrying four teenagers – two boys and two girls. The 16-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to a devastating crash that claimed the lives of the two girls.

Details of the Monaro Highway Crash

The car, driven at excessive speeds of up to 200 km/h, spun out of control on a bend, slid across lanes, and crashed through fencing before colliding with trees. The impact was so severe that one tree was severed at its trunk. Tragically, the two girls, Claire Sankey (15) and Susi Kopysiewicz (14), sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene. The two boys fled the scene in an Uber.  

Investigation and Appeal for Witnesses

The 16-year-old driver was subsequently charged and jailed for two years for culpable driving causing death and failing to render assistance. A coronial inquest into the incident was suspended until after the criminal proceedings concluded. Coroner Ken Archer acknowledged the immeasurable grief experienced by the families and expressed his deepest condolences.
